In this Harvard Business Review article, John Sullivan provides seven guidelines for developing questions that result in successful hires. 

Our key takeaways: 

• Make it personal- Always be sure to review their resume and any other provided information ahead of the interview. Don’t waste time asking questions you can find the answer to. 
• Focus more on the here and now – How would they solve one of your current problems?  
• Avoid easy-to-practice questions – No more questions like “what are your strengths and weaknesses”! 
• Make your pitch – Don’t forget to focus on yourself and your business! A first interview is like a first date, it is just as important for the candidate to leave the meeting feeling excited about the opportunity to work with you.
